You’ve probably noticed how rapidly current mediums of technology are changing. Traditional CDs & DVDs will be replaced by a new generation of digital media in a few years, and the progress of wireless technologies and internet enabled communication will make a number of communications technologies obsolete. The technology slope is accelerating at a record pace, and if a corporation is too specialized on a “ground-breaking” technology that can quickly become obsolete, that company will be left behind in the unforgiving market.
Here are some companies that may be left behind because of an obsolete technology:
1) XM Satellite Radio & Sirius Satellite Radio
The fundamental question is: Why do we need to go to outer space to access CD quality music? I think that the advent of internet radio will quickly make satellite radio obsolete. Neither major company expects to earn a profit until 2008 but by then I’d expect to access internet radio from my car. With the advent of broadband wireless technology that can span many miles and costs less than satellite, the usefulness of satelite transmitted data as used by these companies should decline greatly.
2) Netflix
CDs & DVDs are quickly being replaced by digital media that can be downloaded from a computer and by the new standard, Blu-Ray discs. iPods & mp3s are quickly replacing CDs and before long we will be able to download full length movies on your TV. With download speeds and bandwidth constantly increasing across the internet, the availability of full quality DVDs is within reach, and becoming moreso every day. Who wants to wait 2-3 days to watch a movie anyways? Netflix is in trouble unless they can change in a big way; distributing digital content through the mail is going the way of the dinosaur.
3) General Motors
Car manufacturing is a very expensive process, especially in the United States. Several automakers are taking big steps to increase the offshore presence to China, Vietnam, and Mexico. Meanwhile, General Motors continues to ramp up efforts in the United States. General Motors will continue to lose billions of dollars unless they can expand cost-cutting efforts to offshore manufacturing plants.
Keep in mind that you can profit in the stock market from shorting stocks, too. Selling a stock short is essentially betting that the particular stock falls in value. If the stock drops, you profit. I believe the three stocks above will fall drastically over the next decade unless they can turn things around in a big way.

In the age of modern computing there is such a thing as too far for some people. For the religious right often it seems that certain people believe that too far into the depths of the human genome we shall dive and people won’t be people anymore and so stem cells, genetic mutations, and the like are just out of the question. For other people they get creeped out by the fact that one can find you at any given moment by cell phones, and they believe that tracking technology is coming too far and they want to move out to the arctic.
Yet it always seems that those kooky scientists don’t have a problem when it comes to stepping it up in the world of science. With every advancement there is not only a reason that we should proceed, but also the general consensus that everything they’re doing is for the good of humanity. That is not always the case however. Other than of course the religious scientists out there and just any plain other scientist that has (rightfully so) an opposing viewpoint, even the general usually callous to forewarnings group of tech-scientists seem to be worried. What about? AI. Artificial intelligence.
They have taught robots how to put themselves together. They have taught a robot how to learn, so that it can discover motor abilities and the power of speech. Just imagine, a robot that is smarter, more capable physically, and certainly more durable than a human. How would that work in the workplace? Would labor jobs suffer? Would statiticians cease to exist? Economists? Cooks? Virtually any part of society in a workplace could be in some sense replaced with a Robot they fear. And what of the Societal repercussions? Could they own a house? Could they get married? Who knows.
Also this is very important on the home front. Robots in the home would lead to security errors unlike anything imaginable. Your computer now is something that is protected so you are not attacked by means of computer vulnerability. But what if the computer itself attacked you? That is something you’d have to worry about with a 300 lb robot in the home. Which is why people need Professionals

Optical disks are great for taking backups of data regularly. However, like any other storage device, a DVD too is prone to losing your data unexpectedly due to a variety of reasons.
Reasons for Data Loss
Data can be lost from DVDs due to hardware or software errors. The problem with DVDs, for all their advantages, is that their data-recording surface is exposed to the elements and not shielded. This is in contrast to devices such as USB drives, tape drives and hard disks where such surface is protected by a plastic or metal casing. This poses many challenges for the user. The biggest one is to keep the DVD’s recording surface clean and spic and span.
Since all data resides on the disk surface, it is essential that it be kept as free from contamination as possible. Otherwise, the laser emitted by the read / write head will not be able to read the data pattern properly. The exposed DVD surface is most often dirtied by finger prints as the users carelessly pick up the disk. Then there are oily smudges that accrue when the DVD surface gets spilt over with some viscous liquid. Even worse than finger prints and smudges are scratches which make the laser bounce off the disk surface back to the lens incorrectly. Hardware damage due to exposure of the disk to excessive heat is another reason why data may get lost from a DVD.
Apart from hardware errors, there are many software errors due to which people may lose their critical files from a DVD. Most of these errors are user-inflicted, the most common being accidental deletion of files. Many individuals reformat their DVD before realising that there was some important data residing on it. With the rising popularity of the Internet, many viruses and other nasties such as Trojans and worms manage to gain illegal entry into computer systems. From there, they copy themselves onto DVDs and infect files, leading to data loss. In many cases, the data structure of files may get corrupted because of which they cannot be opened by the user.
Recovering the Data
Data loss from DVDs is a major problem because the critical files residing on the disk cannot be accessed. The first priority for a victim of data loss is to get the missing files back as soon as possible without incurring a huge expense so as to minimise the consequences. The easiest and quickest way available to users to recover the DVD data is by using a Do It Yourself (DIY) recovery software. Many companies today offer this software online that you can purchase from their websites and download to your computer. You then just have to follow the simple instructions to extract the missing files.
However, there are dozens of DIY recovery software out there vying for your attention and money. Most users are quite confused as to which one to go for and usually rely on sales pitch and inflated performance claims given on the websites. However, to take a correct decision, you have to keep many things in mind and look for certain features in the recovery software.
DVDs can be formatted in many ways, one of which enables them to use “drag and drop” feature of the Windows operating system. With these, you can drag and drop any file from your computer to the DVD or delete it using the right mouse button. When you purchase a DIY software, it is important to find out if it supports recovery from DVDs formatted this way.
Many people use DVDs for archiving data for a long period of time. To cram the maximum number of files on the disk, these are often zipped and compressed to make them smaller in size. The recovery software you choose should have the ability to recover zipped files. Also, it should be able to extract files that you have deleted from the disk. Some DIY software even have the capability of recovering data from DVDs that have been reformatted, and you should chose them if they are available.
DVDs come in many sizes. Those used in digital cameras and music systems are smaller in size. You have to ensure that these can be processed by the DIY recovery software before you shell out the money. Another important thing is that it should be able to give you access to the DVD bypassing the operating system.
If the DVD suffers from a severe hardware error, then the DIY software would be of no use. You will have to take the disk to a professional data recovery company.
